    Douglas Charles have partnered with a fantastic Law Firm with over 200 years of combined experience who are looking to recruit a Senior Cost Specialist. Our clients hands-on approach yields the best results and superior service to ensure positive outcomes for our clients.     All employees must manage themselves and their workload efficiently (with the support of a Manager/Team Leader) and conduct their duties proactively to ensure that the objectives of the business and the needs of the clients are met quickly and with maximum effect.


    The role would suit a hard-working, self-motivated person with a high level of attention to

    detail who is happy to work on cases alone (with the support of a team and Manager) and

    who can work to deadlines and meet targets.


    Job Outline

    In any contentious case there is usually an agreement or court order at the end that case

    where the losing party will pay the legal costs of the successful party.

    As a Senior Costs Specialist, when acting for the successful party, we are responsible for

    negotiating and settling our client’s claim for legal costs. This will involve dealing with all

    aspects of legal work and interaction with Solicitors and the Court.

    The types of cases you will deal with will range from car accident cases to claims for industrial

    disease and deafness to clinical negligence cases. Legal fees can range from a few thousand pounds to, in some cases, many millions of pounds and the importance of what you do should never be understated.

    You need to be able to undertake this task to a very high standard.

    Duties of the Role

    • Managing your own files
    • Conducting advocacy
    • Attending CCMC/CMC hearings to deal with advocacy regarding the Cost Budget

    and/or directions.

    • Conducting costs litigation and draft all necessary court documents
    • Drafting instructions to counsel in appropriate cases
    • Providing high quality technical advice and support to all teams when necessary,

    including with fixed costs cases and Part 8 proceedings

    • Ensuring that paper and electronic files are maintained in good order and that

    attendance notes are made promptly to maximise cost recovery

    • Ensuring that all Court deadlines are complied with and properly diarised
    • Drafting POD’s/ Replies
    • Conducting Negotiations
    • Preparing detailed advice on cost recovery prospects
    • Drafting statement of Costs for summary assessment
    • Ensuring client instructions and requirements are followed and KPIs met
    • Liaising with claimant and defendant solicitors, Counsel and Court
    • Negotiating settlements as quickly as possible on the best terms available


    You will need to conduct your work in accordance with the highest possible professional

    standards and with reference to the professional codes of practice, money laundering

    regulations and regulatory requirements.


    You will need to work consistently in accordance with protocols systems and procedures

    across the firm, utilising Proclaim (a case management system) and Costs Master (cost

    drafting software) as required.

    1. A) Use of Case Management Systems

    1) Check terms and conditions are in place with the client

    2) Ensure that the terms and conditions cover the work requested

    3) Import the terms and conditions into Proclaim

    4) Review file and identify and create appropriate tasks

    5) Monitor task lists on a daily basis to ensure tasks are dealt with in order of priority

    6) Review and complete tasks and update Proclaim

    1. B) Communications

    1) Review emails on a daily basis and move all case specific emails into the relevant case

    on Proclaim

    2) Update task lists accordingly with any new information especially deadlines and key


    3) Ensure all outgoing case specific emails be generated and sent via Proclaim

    4) Follow holiday and absence protocols regarding email auto response and forwarding


    5) Ensuring all communications made or received from any party on a specific case are

    recorded that day onto Proclaim

    2. Attend team meetings on a regular basis
    3. Attend training sessions
    4. Work in accordance with the firm’s policies and procedures including diversity and
